Research template · every week

Continuous discovery

A product team learning every week towards one outcome.

Takes every week. The part only real people can do: regular interviews.

Phases

Outcome

Name the outcome the team is trying to move.

Done when: Is there one outcome the team owns and can measure?

Methods that fit: Frame a decision, Write a project brief, Import research data

Opportunities

Map the needs and pains between people and the outcome.

Done when: Is there a target opportunity picked from real interviews?

Methods that fit: Run an interview, Synthesize insights, Write jobs to be done, Map opportunities, Check what new evidence changes

Solutions

Come up with several answers to the target opportunity.

Done when: Are there at least three solutions to compare?

Methods that fit: Write how-might-we statements, Ideate concepts, Vary the concept, Score concepts

Assumption tests

Test the riskiest assumptions behind the best solutions.

Done when: Has each solution’s riskiest assumption been tested?

Methods that fit: Map assumptions, Build a prototype, Run usability tests, Run a pre-mortem
